About the poet...
Joaquin Capehart is a native of Queens, NY. As a young child his father introduced him to the poetical stylings of Gil Scott-Heron and The Last Poets. In the fifth grade, he fell in love with the freedom of expression that writing poetry offered. Now in his thirties, poetry is Joaquin’s purpose. His latest full length poetry book, What If I Said was released in June of 2018.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic Joaquin would also recite poems in rooms full of strangers, when sharing poetry in person (and now sometimes virtually) he is known as JaeCee The Poet. He performed over seventy times in 2019, including shows in Washington, DC, The Bowery Poetry Club and the legendary Langston Hughes House in Harlem, NY. Joaquin has a professional background in youth development, he has hosted poetry/life workshops for programs based in the Bronx & Queens for ages 17-24. In June of 2020 Joaquin completed an international annual 24-hour poetry world marathon (ThePoetryMarathon.com); where he had to write one poem an hour for twenty-four hours straight. His poem from the seventeenth hour, “I let my tape rock till my tape Pop” is published in the 2020 Poetry Marathon Anthology which is available on Amazon.com. Another poem of his “P.O.P. (Point of Privilege)” has been published in The Black Renaissance Anthology 2021. Jean Marie Bub’s 2021 book, MANEATER features a poem he wrote titled “Red Brushstrokes”. Coffee Clock is a handmade limited run chapbook composed of all the poems he wrote during the 2020 poetry marathon. It was published in June of 2021. In August 2021 Joaquin alongside his two friends(and fellow poets) Jonathan Cherlin and Axel Nunez started an open mic in Queens, New York. Restless Open Mic runs every Monday Night from 7PM-9:30pm at a place called Marche Le Woof. Joaquin’s next full-length collection of poems, Something To Leave Behind will be published in September of 2022. |
